17. Pretty in Pink (1986)

I’m a huge John Hughes fan so I don’t know why it’s taken me so long to finally watch this. I’ve heard so much about it, particularly how it ends and how it “should” have ended.
Now that I’ve watched the film, I’m not sure how I feel about it. I love the characters and the general plot but I don’t feel it was executed properly. It seemed far too short, and was downright stagnant in places. I also felt like they changed the ending about two minutes before shooting it. That said, Blane > Duckie everyday, always (I would probably feel differently if Duckie was played by Anthony Michael Hall and Andrew McCarthy wasn’t so cute with his Chandler Bingness).

So many people fail today in their ability to make an homage to a certain type of art. It is even harder to create something that both honors that art and acts as if it were part of the very group of works it elevates. Who would have ever guessed something like that would ever come from a Blacksploitation tribute?
